ROLE: Exam Scribe/Reader

SCHOOL: Wickersley School and Sports College

SALARY: £12.85 per hour

CONTRACT: Casual

Are you a patient and articulate individual with excellent literacy skills? We are looking for Exam Scribes and Readers to support our students during the exam season, ensuring that those with additional needs have a fair and equal opportunity to demonstrate their knowledge.

About WPT

At Wickersley Partnership Trust (WPT), we are fueled by a single commitment: 'We never knowingly do less for other people’s children than we would for our own.' As a thriving network of schools across South Yorkshire, we combine high expectations with embedded inclusivity. We do not work in silos; instead, we rely on deep collaboration and school-to-school support to ensure every student develops socially, emotionally, and academically to achieve the highest standards.

About the Role

This is a crucial casual role that supports students with Special Educational Needs or disabilities (access arrangements) during examinations and controlled assessments. As a Scribe or Reader, you are the student's tool to access the paper; you will either read questions to them or write down their dictated answers. This role requires strict neutrality—you cannot help with the answers, but you must ensure the student can navigate the exam paper effectively. You will work under the guidance of the Exams Officer and must strictly adhere to Joint Council for Qualifications (JCQ) regulations to ensure the integrity of the exam.

Responsibilities

  • Reader Duties: Accurately read examination papers or assessment materials to candidates (instructions and questions only) without explaining or clarifying meanings. You must enable visually impaired candidates to identify diagrams or tables without providing factual information.

  • Scribe Duties: Write or type accurately and at a reasonable speed, exactly what the candidate dictates. You must not give factual help or indicate when an answer is incomplete, but must draw/add to diagrams strictly in accordance with the candidate’s instructions (unless it is a design paper).

  • Reviewing Work: Read back what the candidate has written when requested, and make corrections (writing or word processing) only if specifically instructed by the candidate.

  • Compliance: Strict adherence to JCQ regulations is essential; failure to do so could lead to the disqualification of the candidate. This includes maintaining absolute neutrality and not advising candidates on which questions to answer or the order in which to answer them.

  • Communication: Immediately refer any communication problems or issues during the examination to the invigilator.

  • Spelling & Support: Give the spelling of a word only if it appears on the question paper (without decoding symbols/units) and strictly upon request.

Why Join Us?

  • Competitive hourly rate

  • Flexible, casual working hours suitable for students, retirees, or those seeking supplemental income

  • Generous Local Government (support staff) Pension Scheme (where eligible)

  • Health and Wellbeing, including a Westfield Health subscription

  • Professional Growth and Development

***Closing Date: 20th June 2026***
